5 Causes of Failure in Your Bearings
2021-07-15
Bearings are precision parts and as such we must treat them, they are the dynamic supports of rotating machinery, in general, large bearing manufacturers ensure in their production processes that the bearings meet the highest quality standards, thereby ensuring a reliable bearing.
Even so, some bearings will fail prematurely, affecting machinery and production processes, below we list the most common causes why bearings are failing today, what are their failure modes and the important thing to do to prevent them from repeat this fault.
1.LUBRICATION: It is no secret to anyone that about three-quarters of bearings that fail prematurely are due to poor lubrication, this is because the most important thing is the lubricating film created through the viscosity of the base oil, among The causes that originate this deficiency can include inadequate lubricants, excessive amounts, degradation of lubricants or a shortage of it.
2.CONTAMINATION: Caused by foreign substances typically contained in the lubricant at the time of application or by the process itself where the bearing is operating, ingress of water or solid substances.
3. IMPROPER ASSEMBLY (OVERLOAD): Occurs when the bearing is cold mounted with inappropriate methods, for example: chisels, punches, direct blows, bronzes, etc.
4. MOISTURE CORROSION: Caused by long-term storage of equipment with lubricated bearings, also by sealing failures and ingress of water in backup equipment, mainly pumping equipment.
5. STORAGE AND HANDLING: It occurs when the bearing is not stored correctly, if it is kept in its original packaging, the damage is caused by external vibrations, for long periods of storage with humidity conditions and high temperatures, in case from being out of its packaging caused by the entry of contaminants.
