How to Measure a Bearing
2021-06-24
To measure a bearing, the most appropriate tool is a caliper, also called a gauge. If we do not have one, failing that, a millimeter (mm) ruler can also be used, although it will never be as precise, and it can lead us to take wrong measurements.
We must find out 3 numerical values that are those that physically define the reference of a bearing and whose designation is recognized internationally in all catalogs and reference tables with the letters d x D x B being:
d: inside diameter
D: outer diameter
B: width
How to measure the inside diameter of a bearing:
The mobile rule is slid this time with the upper gauge jaws that are inserted between the bearing walls until they reach the stop.
We block the measurement by screwing the fixing screw
We read the measurement in mm that appears in the lower part of the mobile rule
How to measure the outside diameter of a bearing:
The movable rule is slid open until the bearing is caught between the two lower clamps or jaws that make contact with the bearing.
We lock the measure by screwing the fixing screw
We read the measurement in mm that appears in the lower part of the mobile ruler.
How to measure the width of a bearing:
We carry out the same operation as with the outside diameter, using the lower caliper jaws.
WHAT ARE THE MEASUREMENTS OF A BEARING USED?
These measurements are the basic information to be able to proceed with the identification of the bearing.
There are mobile applications where you enter the measurements and it gives you the reference, for example I leave a link to one of them:
Then we are going to find a great variety of types and versions of bearings, suitable for each application, it is then where we must go to a specialized company so that they can advise us correctly.
